HLTCC409 – Epilepsy and Seizure Support

This course equips workers with the knowledge and skills to effectively support individuals with epilepsy and manage seizures safely.


Introduction:

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition that requires informed, confident support to ensure safety and wellbeing. This course introduces workers to the fundamentals of epilepsy and seizure management, focusing on recognising seizures, responding appropriately, and following individualised care plans.


Target Audience:

Support workers, disability support staff, aged care workers, and healthcare assistants supporting individuals with epilepsy.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand basic brain anatomy and epilepsy
  • Identify different types of seizures and triggers
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of seizures
  • Provide appropriate first aid during and after seizures
  • Follow individual Seizure Management Plans (SMP) and deliver person-centred care
  • Identify and manage risks during seizures, including choking and aspiration
  • Recognise when a seizure is a medical emergency and follow escalation procedures
  • Safely assist with rescue medication as per the support plan
  • Monitor the participant before, during, and after a seizure
  • Accurately document seizure activity and report care provided
  • Support the use of seizure-related equipment and devices where required
